바티칸의 266대 교황 프란치스코를 그렸습니다.

저는 이 분의 '생각과 말과 행위'를 존경합니다.
무신론자인 제가 마음편하게 성당에 다닐 수 있게 해주셨죠.
I respect his thoughts, words, and behavior.
I am an atheist, but thanks to him, I can feel at ease in the church.

할아버지 때부터 온집안이 카톨릭 신자입니다.
제 아내는 순교자 가족의 후손이기도 하죠.
Since my grandfather, my whole family is a Catholic.
Even my wife is a descendant of a martyr family.

그다지 엄격하게 신앙생활을 하지는 않았습니다.
한국의 여느 가톨릭 가정이 그러하듯 ...
It was not very strict in my religious life.
Like any other Catholic family in Korea

어려서부터 성경이나 다른 종교의 신화들을 자주 읽었고
한 때는 신부님이 되고 싶었던 적도 있습니다.
I have been reading stories of Bible and various religions since childhood.
Sometimes I thought I wanted to be a priest.

그러다가 어느날 갑자기 무신론자가 되어버렸습니다.
네오가 매트릭스를 보게 되는 느낌과 비슷하려나요.
Then one day suddenly became an atheist.
It feels like Neo to see the Matrix ...

저는 예수 그리스도를... 무조건 믿어야하는 신적인 존재가 아닌
시대를 앞서간 철학 사상가 정도로 생각합니다.
이런 종파가 있다고는 하던데...
I do not think that Jesus Christ is a divine being to be unconditionally believed.
I think of him as a philosophical thinker born too early.
I heard that there are sects like me who gather ...

이런걸로 저를 탓하는 가족은 없습니다.
However, no family blames me for this.

그래도 성당을 좋아해서
명절, 대축일 등에는 꼭 갑니다. ^^
Still, I like the Catholic Church.
I go to the holidays and celebrations. ;-D

국내외 여행지에서도 현지 성당에는 꼭 방문합니다.
I do not miss visiting a local cathedral for sightseeing during my trip.

2백 몇십년 전, 조선은 세계에서 유일하게 역선교를 통해
실용학문으로서 '천주학'을 수입해 서양철학과 평등사상을 연구하고 전파했습니다.
200 years ago and a few decades ago,
Korea was the only one in the world to bring Catholicism without a missionary.
Many scholars have imported 'Catholicism' to do practical studies
They studied Western philosophy and equality and spread it widely.

나중에 한동안 박해를 받게 되자
프랑스 군대를 끌어들여 '병인양요'를 일으킨 흑역사가 있긴 하지만
Later, when the Korean government persecuted,
A believer asked the French troops to invade Korea quickly.
Although there is such a shameful history,

현대에 이르러서 한국의 카톨릭은
'민주화 투쟁'과 '인권운동'의 큰 축이 되었습니다.
In modern times, Korean Catholics
It has become a big axis of 'democratization struggle and human rights movement'.

그리고 전통문화와 다른 종교를 배려하고
신앙을 강요하지 않습니다.
And considering traditional culture and other religions
It does not force faith.

심지어 여러 해 동안 함께 일한 동료직원끼리도
카톨릭 신자인걸 서로 모르는 경우가 많습니다.
Even colleagues who have worked together for years
Catholic believers often do not know each other.

어떤 나라에서는 카톨릭이 민폐 쩐다고 하는데
적어도 우리나라에서는 모범적인 종교로 인정받고 있습니다.
In some countries, Catholic churches often cause social problems.
But at least in Korea, it is recognized as an exemplary religion.

게다가 세금도 잘 내요.
Besides, It pay taxes well too.

어쨌든 프란치스코 교황님이 오랫동안 건강하셨으면 좋겠습니다.
Anyway....I want Pope Francis to be healthy for a long time.
