1,000 acres of watermelons were destroyed due to the use of 'Egben 50% F' liquid pesticide by Genetica Industries Ltd. in the watermelon field in Hatia Upazila of Noakhali. 50 farmers of village No. 22 of Charking Union of Upazila have complained about the destruction of watermelon fields due to the use of this liquid pesticide. The affected farmers filed a complaint with the union council chairman against Yuvraj and Shamim, local dealers of the pesticide company.

In the complaint letter, it is said that after some days of application of medicine from the local Janata Bazar pesticide shop, the watermelons got tangled. When trying to contact the representative of the company they are not receiving the mobile.

Regarding the complaint, local UP Chairman Naim Uddin Ahmed said that a coordination team including Upazila Agriculture Extension Officer, Assistant Agriculture and local ward members has been formed to find a way to solve the problem. On Wednesday, after observing the affected watermelon fields on the ground, the truth of the complaints of the farmers was found. Farmers said that watermelon is grown on about 100 kani (1 thousand 600 acres) in this area. Among them, about 50 farmers in 60 kani (9 thousand 600 acres) land after using this 'Egben 50% F' have got their watermelons tangled. Which is not going to recover. He said that they will suffer a loss of 1.5 to 2 lakh rupees. But watermelons in fields where these pesticides are not applied are doing very well. They also said that every year we buy pesticides worth lakhs of rupees from the pesticide shop of Yuvraj's Daspara Bazar and the pesticide shop of Shamim's Janata Bazar. We also gave the medicine in the right order and in the right dose. But because of the company's adulterated pesticides, all our capital is gone.
Abul Kalam, a farmer affected by the use of this liquid pesticide, said that he had taken a loan of Tk 50,000 from BRAC and cultivated watermelons on Barga land. Watermelon farmers named Khabir, Tuhin and Raihan also said the same thing. Another watermelon farmer named Jamal from the same area said that he took a loan of 1 lakh from the moneylender in annual installments of 24,000 taka. But this adulterated pesticide has ended all our hopes.
