Models of political leadership are now important to review. Indonesia will soon elect a new president. The election date is July 9, 2014. Political leadership models are identified as important to identify the characteristics of each candidate who will compete later.

There are at least four models of political leadership: (1) Statesman, (2) Demagog, (3) Regular politician, and (4) Citizen-Leader. [1] Statesman is a political leader who has a vision, personal charisma, practical wisdom, and concern for the public interest whose leadership is beneficial to society. A demagog is someone who uses his lead skills to gain public office by appealing to common fears and prejudices to then abuse the power he gains for personal gain. A politician in a public position who is ready to sacrifice previously owned principles or override unpopular policies to be re-elected. Citizen-Leader A person who influences the government convincingly even if he does not hold official government posts.

Characteristics of Each Model of Political Leadership

The definition of each model of political leadership is well known. The next problem is, how to do pality to identify a candidate into which category. For that required a set of indicators. This indicator is important for measuring the character of an individual candidate.

Characteristics of Statesman are:
Pursuing the common good. The best leaders are motivated not by harsh self-interest but by the common good.

Therefore, a good leader must have practical wisdom, whereby through that wisdom, the leader can understand the relationship between actions taken with the consequences.

Without sufficient political expertise, it is impossible for these tough tasks to work well.
Exceptional opportunity. The statesman was born of a critical condition. When a country is in a vortex of boredom, boredom, stagnation, disoriention, or war, from which the statesman is generally born.

Characteristics of Demagog is:
It exploits public prejudices. As a figure, demagogues are very sensitive to social prejudices that flourish in society. He then portrayed himself as standing on the side of society with respect to the prejudices that arose. The role is accompanied by a series of promises that he will ensure that prejudice will be overcome if he takes up political office.
Often distorted the truth. Truth is nothing more than a political commodity. If the truth is not in line with his practice to gain power, he will distort it. The distortion is largely reinforced by various "powerful" facts he compiled so that the distortion makes sense. In other words, he makes "chronicle" a series of historical stories that reinforce his position on the existing truth.
