4 things every team needs to be successful
There is nothing like a healthy, productive team. Being on a great team makes everything easier and more joyful.
Unfortunately, not all teams are great and not all teams succeed. Being a great team requires work. Being a great team is not an accident and certain things need to be intentionally put in place.
Here are four things every team needs in order to be successful.
#1 clarity
A good team is clear about what it is about and what it wants to accomplish and why. Basically this means there is vision. A clear picture of what the goal is and clear roles for team members. Every one knows what they are after and what their role is. They also know what victory looks like.
A lack of clarity and vision is sure to leave a team lost in confusion and hurt progress.
#2 unity
Unity is vital and non negotiable in securing success as a team. The number one thing to kill a team is division. Unity will come on the heels of vision. When a team is united, everyone is on board, and embraces their role in the team's efforts. Once division sets in, progress is stifled and a team can very well implode.
Create, maintain and guard unity at all costs.
#3 loyalty
Next is loyalty. Each team member needs to be committed to the team, and not just look out for their own interests. Loyalty to the team will mean that each member is looking for ways to help the overall success of the team.
Loyalty is the result of buy in. When people have buy in they are more likely to be committed to the team.
#4 accountability
Lastly is accountability. Accountability keeps everyone operating with integrity. A healthy team will be able to have difficult conversations and deal with confrontation in a healthy way. When members are allowed to slack with no consequences or confrontation the value of excellence is missing and the prospect of success are weakened.
A good way to have accountability is to maintain visible key performance indexes and have coaching relationships that are designed to help each team member grow into all that they can be.
