It’s a play to keep some control of the brick market. If Lego doesn’t provide there will always be channels that do. Hopefully Lego sees the value in the adult market and doesn’t tighten the noose too much.

I think they are seeing more value in tapping into the design side of things via the Stud.io application. Given they already control the manufacturing, they won't want to drive sellers away from the hobby or it will hurt sales elsewhere.

And there is also BrickOwl as an alternative (for now)
