It is obvious that when we expect good things we do our possible best to make it happen.
Setting a goal and working towards it will be very difficult if you don't know you reward at the end.

Soccer is a popular sports I every body knows about, in football there is pre season (friendly) and there is compensations.
During the pre-season period it is not always taken serious. The coach and players take it for fun even the fans because there is no reward it.
Sometimes there best of players are left in the bench.

But when it comes to competition all seriousness is putting into it both the fans. Everyone knows about the rewards.
