The difference between being busy and being productive
Many people think when they are busy that they are productive. But there is a big difference between being busy and being productive.
To not fall into the trap of being 'busy with nothing', here are 5 points to be aware of:
1- Do you have a purpose?
By this I mean do you know what your plan for today is, and tomorow etc In addition, when you are doing tasks, ask yourself why you are doing that task, and if it is part of your bigger goal/plan.
2- What is your productive work time?
Many people waste time working the wrong times and produce work that is of poor quality. Even worse, they use times their minds are occupied with other distractions and their attention is thus divided. Work on your goals/tasks during the times when you know you will not be interrupted or when your mind is clear. For some, this is early mornings, for others it's late afternoon and for another group of people is late at night or on the weekends. By knowing yourself, you will save yourself a lot time.
3- Avoid doing too much at the same time
Multitasking is not always a postive trait. For example, driving and using the phone at the same is not exactly a clever or safe combination. Equally, avoid multitasking when working on your goals. Make a list of everything you need to do, then order them into order of priority. Once you have done this, work on each task according to that priority. Focus on one thing at a time. As the old native American saying goes: "The man who chases two rabbits, catches neither."
4- Recognize when you can't do everthing yourself
It's often good tp not rely on others, but there are times when you should ask for help or learn to delegate. Don't waste your time on minor work when your attention is needed in more urgent matters. Ask for help where necessary or delegate!
5- Be aware of time
It's important to ay your time so you can monitor your progress. In addition, you can also be aware when doing too much research (for example) is wasting your time. Stay focused and count the minutes and the hours. Many people waste hours on one task only to find that they have wasted their time on minor areas and neglected the most important aspects of the task.
