Sound Pollution going Unchecked!

SOUND POLLUTION AT ITS BEST!

Sound pollution is a big problem in our country, and in my neighborhood in particular. There is going to be a major festival called the Sri Lankan New Year in the coming week and we can see thousands of eager shoppers flocking shops and malls in the cities, towns, bazaars and even village boutiques to prepare for the New Year celebrations.

Naturally, the vendors want to advertise to the public about their “Grand Sales” by various means, but most of them are confined to business places. Here what we see is in the heart of a Colombo residential neighborhood. The loud music is going on for the past three weeks, non-stop throughout the day until late in the evening and will go on up to the Festival!

There are babies, old people and patients who need some rest to their bodies and ears. Though the sound of music is deafening, no one dares to make it an issue with the authorities through fear of intimidation by the vendors concerned, who may be connected to powerful politicians. This is the sad state of affairs in Third World countries like India and Sri Lanka and may be in many more countries.

Ordinary folks in some parts of the world have to suffer silently with all the NOISE POLLUTION in their day to day life!
