The beginning of my weight loss/fitness journey + its so damn expensive to eat healthy

in #life7 years ago

Last night i decided it was time i did something about my continuous weight gain. I know i'm not as skinny as i used to be but at 6 "4 i can often get away with adding a little extra on. My mum is always telling me when she see's me that my stomach and thighs are getting chubby of which i take no offence to but getting into the heat of the Aussie summer and working with no shirt on i'm starting to notice it for myself. I think the tipping point was probably last week when i went to visit a mate and his mum said whats going on here and patted my stomach(lol) and then even my friend chimed in with yea you're starting to look like so and so(insert overweight friends name here)

So for the last week I've been thinking about it and last night i finally decided it was time. I've never been what you would call fat, i'm a big guy in general but i think over the last year or so my metabolism has started to slow as i'm getting older. That being said I don't eat the healthiest of diets. Again i'm 6 ft'4 and i weigh around 110 kg(242.5 lb). 110 kg of pure man!!! Alright maybe its more like 80 kg of pure man and 30 kilos of pizza and KFC.

That's me currently, again i don't look "fat" but i'm by no means toned or fit. I smoke which doesn't help my cardio attempts but I work in construction and i do hard labour (or at least labour sometimes its not so hard) for 8 hours a day 5 days a week so it's clearly not being active that's holding me back, rather more my diet.
I don't eat breakfast and lunch usually consists of 4 ham and cheese toasted sandwiches and a coffee, Dinner is either some form of takeout, a frozen meal or 2 baked potatoes loaded up with deliciousness. Oh and i love to snack when i get home from work on whatever chips/chocolate/cookies i have in the house. Other than that i essentially survive off nicotine and caffeine.

So today i went and did my "healthy shop". Lots of fruit veggies and good meats. And guess what? it cost me about twice as much as my usual unhealthy shop and probably wont last as long. Is this why we have an obesity epidemic? no people are just lazy, its easy and cheap to eat healthy if you do it right but i'm looking to minimize carbs massively increase my protein intake to lose fat and gain muscle. I guess the problem with eating healthy is it really doesn't taste as good. Sure a steak and veggies will taste good, but as good as pizza? definitely not. Still with the obesity rate at all time high we really need to be doing more to curb our love of fast food and eating right.

So this was today's shop. It consists of chicken breast, steak and meatballs for my meat. A bunch of veggies including carrots, broccoli(yuk), tomatoes, beans, corn and spinach, will mostly be used for making salads with the steak for dinner. Some protein powder, oat, low fat yogurt and banana for breakfast smoothies.

Aiming to have smoothies and scrambled egg whites for breakfast, 2 up and go's and a boiled egg at around 9.30, pasta and meatballs at lunch or 2 sandwiches, another shake when i get home and then a salad with either steak or chicken breast for dinner so i don't consume too much before bed which is when it all seems to stick around.

My goals aren't really weight based but more based on how i look and feel. I'd be happy to be sitting around 95-100kg and a lot more toned than i currently am, i'm probably not going to do much extra exercise because like i said 5 days a week i'm doing labor at work so there should be enough physicality there to do me, maybe add in a 30 min-1 hour walk some nights if i'm feeling it but see how my schedule goes.
I'm hoping to lose a bit of stomach and thigh fat, as well as some arm fat. I used to sit pretty standard between 80-90kg but i didn't have nearly as much muscle on me as i do now.

For reference that's me around 4-5 years ago, same height but probably around 30 kilos lighter, and my diet was worse then haha. God damn ageing and slowing metabolism, sucks ass.
Oh well time to adapt i suppose. I have been considering joining a gym but with working full time and all the extra stuff i do for work, as well as trying to stay active on Steemit and trading ma crypto i don't think i have time, or rather i doubt i will make the time for it and will likely end up just losing money but if i end up moving to part time work again which im hoping i may reconsider.

I plan on taking progress shots every 5-7 days and seeing how it goes, i don't expect to make a lot of progress in that time don't worry, i know it takes time but i'm usually able to drop my extra weight pretty quick, it will be the adding muscle i expect to take a bit of time but i shall see how i go.

@bigdizzle91, you're a hardworking Aussie, aren't you?

You are a pragmatist too. It is good you are thinking a great deal of how much value a gym membership will be to you.

It is true that the healthiest of foods are the most expensive and worst tasting and don't last long! Look forward to checking back on your progress.

If it's any consolation, once you get used to eating less processed foods your tastes start to change. A lot of the crap I used to like I can't stomach now.

I think you're taking the right approach by making it a lifestyle change for your health rather than an attempt to lose weight. Keep it up and let us know how you go.
