RE: An HONEST Review of Tucson, Arizona

in #life8 years ago

You forgot to mention the awesome restaurants in Tucson! I lived there for about a year and 1/2 over two decades ago and I still have fond memories of many of them (Cafe Terra Cotta was my favorite, but I just looked it up and was saddened to learn it closed).

It is funny because I guess I didn't really think of the food in some ways. There are a lot of great Mexican restaurants here but I kind of got spoiled by an authentic Mexican restaurant in my home town back in Indiana so I never thought the Mexican restaurants here were any better in a lot of ways. They do have a new place downtown called the HUB which I really like and they have all kinds of really great ice cream flavors. I also like eating the all you can eat Sushi at Sushi Garden.

Not sure if they're still there any more, but in addition to the excellent Mexican restaurants, I had a few other favs: Scordato's, Olsen's, Daniel's, Majarah (Indian), El Corral (best prime rib restaurant I've ever been too), and Cafe Melange (nice frittatas for breakfast). My favorite bagel place was also there, but can't remember name now (they made an apricot-walnut cream cheese that I really loved and you could get a freshly cooked egg, not microwaved, with your bagel). For brunch on the weekends there was Sheraton Conquistador and Jerome's (these last were pricy, but we usually had coupons, see below).

We bought one of those big coupon books from our employer (Burr Brown, later bought out by Texas Instruments) and literally used up the coupon book and bought another one, which saved us a ton of money on restaurant bills. We found a lot of places that way. We also tried a couple of the "super high-end places" like the Mansion and some other one downtown (forget the name now), but they were a bit over-priced for the money, IMO. But lots of great food at affordable prices there.

Wow, You really know the spots! I will have to look into some of those to see if they still exist. I have eaten at Club Cafe inside of Hotel Congress a couple of times and that was really good as well.
