  • THE LOST MOSQUE STORY? *

Early May 2018 I stay at the hotel
Sheraton Grand Jakarta Gandaria City Hotel. this five star hotel is one building with Lotte and Metro Mall. From the 11th LT room I looked down, across the exit to the south visible the green dome of the mosque. Looks big enough the building. I so intend to pray maghrib there. I went down and headed there, which appears only the gate bearing BMMT Al-Asyrotusy Syafi'iyyah. Unseen mosque building. The nameplate of the mosque is not visible from the street as it is covered by many food carts along the sidewalk. It is written the mosque of Jami Al-Asyrotusy Shafi'iyyah. I entered the gate, toward the courtyard of the building resembles a school, but there is no access to the mosque. Actually there is a door on the north that seems to go directly to the mosque, but the door fence is locked. in the yard I met someone who told directions to the mosque, through the hallway or alley inside the school building. Without being told, people do not know the way to the hidden mosque. Looked from the top of the Hotel, but not visible from the highway.
then there was a green mosque, two floors, enough to accommodate 500 worshipers. It looks dark, dull, dirty, grungy and unorganized. The courtyard of the mosque was sprinkled by the leaves of fallen mango trees. The shoe rack has also been destroyed. inside the mosque only about 10 pilgrims prepare for prayer, all young people and one female congregation. Then iqomat is done. The young congregations were seen staring at each other, waiting for who was willing to the priest. Because I feel the oldest I go forward to lead the priest. it seems that the congregation and the adhan are foreigners also like me, mall visitors who want to pray. There is no imam of the mosque in charge of arranging the prayer.
The prayer rug where the priest is ragged, faded, brown and the stinging smell of sweat. I have allergic rhinitis, so sneezing and colds recover by dust and odor.
After praying my view swept across the room. The carpet looks old, dry, curved, sandy, irregular. A hollow ceiling. dirty glass lined with white curtains that turn black. To the left of the prayer place of the imam, the wooden walls have been dyed by termites and nests to form a hill have been formed. I reflect, exactly facing the luxury building, and in Jakarta, why there are still mosques not maintained like this.
I asked the only female congregation, who lived there to take care of the mosque. He told me that this mosque is a waqf. the maid who became his caretaker, has died. His son-in-law replaced, but stayed away from the mosque. So the mosque is not taken care of anymore. The similar buildings of the school are former pesantren, which he said has been dispersed.

in the hotel room I tried searching on google key word enter the name of the mosque, but did not appear the data let alone the description. Even with the Pro Muslim application is not detected the existence of a mosque that is only 200 meters from the hotel.
I reflect. right in front of the hotel and the luxurious mall, amidst the sparkling worldly life of Jakarta, in the middle of a city led by the Muslim governor, the city where the Muslim president lives, there is a mosque that will gradually be lost by the destruction, abandoned by the advancement of the times. a deserted mosque because the conditions are not neglected. Even google did not know him either. Old mosque that seemed "lost" is not gained by crowded Jakarta. with its strategic position, this mosque should have good luck and prosper like Al Masjid Raya Al-Musyawarah in front of mall of ivory and Harris hotel.
I am writing this because I hope there are Muslim citizens of Jakarta who want to look at the mosque, revive and prosper it.
hopefully. Wallahualam.
