Between memory and life
It is very common to see flower vendors in some parks in Vedado. They are usually on their way to Colón Cemetery, where the largest concentration of them can be found in the surrounding areas.
Bringing flowers to the deceased is a deeply rooted practice in Cuban idiosyncrasy. This custom has religious and cultural roots, inherited from both Spanish and African traditions, where the act of bringing flowers represents respect, remembrance, and a way of keeping the bond with those who are no longer with us alive. It is a silent way of saying we are still here, we have not forgotten you.
But not all flowers are for the deceased. I have also seen, and I myself have done it, buying roses to give to very, very alive loved ones 😏 and that is also wonderful. Flowers as a gesture of love, gratitude, or simply everyday affection.
Today I share with you a small selection of photographs as a tribute to both memory and life. I hope you enjoy them and connect with these everyday scenes. Thank you for stopping by and for your support
