A neglected form of nature.
Sometimes in the bushes around us, on the banks of water bodies or in abandoned lands, small pink or white flowers can be seen. Many people avoid it, thinking it is a wild plant, but in Bengali it is known as Biskatali. Its scientific name is mainly included in the Persicaria genus, such as Persicaria orientalis or Persicaria longiseta. In English-speaking countries, it is also called 'Lady's Thumb' or 'Princess Feather'. Biskatali is a shrub-like plant that can usually grow from 30 centimeters to 1 meter tall. Its stem is slightly reddish and knotty. Dark spots are occasionally seen on the long, lanceolate leaves. Its most attractive part is its narrow inflorescence, where numerous small pink or reddish flowers are densely arranged. Despite the 'Bis' in the name, it has some importance in herbal medicine. Various studies have shown that this plant has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In folk medicine, it is used to heal wounds or relieve pain. In addition, it plays a role in the natural ecosystem; its seeds serve as a food source for many birds.
