After we took permissin of Ece's family for wedding, we have also counted as taken their promise. In most of the countries, that promise counts as engagement. But in Turkey, it is just a word. We should have arrange a engagement ceremony which all the relatives, friends and acquaintances take place and witness the engagement. Yes, we love to share our happiness with all the people we know by tormenting ourselves :)
So, that traditions means 3 things to me:
First, engagement dress. It is much alike wedding dress, only in a different color. Ususally in pink, rose or pomegranate flower colors. But model choise, rehearsal and all the stress by doing those are permanent. You could call it as a preliminary sudy of wedding.
Ece's engagement dress pursuit practically take 2 months. We visited almost every bridal store in Istanbul :) 2 months later, she finally found a model. But for the rehearsal part, she should pick her shoes as well. It meant another 15 days to me.
Second, engagement candy to distrbute the guests. It has to be original as you guess. Because Ece is fond of originality. If we make something that has been done before, she would probably turn my life into hell. So we practically allocate 2 months of our lives to find an original candy idea.
Third, and the most tricky part was to pick right place where engagement ceremony to be done. It should be spacious enough to move and dance. But it should not be classic Turkish wedding hall alike. Because we were a modern couple whom wish to complete all traditional formalities. Yes, that kind of an irrationality.
Well at least we found it. The engagement place on Ece's dreams. Where everybody going to dance in classic music accompaniment. Where no traditional dance music going to be played. Where everybody cachinnates in a great joy without drum and clarion sound.
Yes, yes. It didn't work like that. Once i took Ece from coiffeur to engagement hall, i knew that nothing will ng to be as Ece dreamt. For me, it doesn't matter how we engaged. I just wanted to be engaged. But Ece would be frustrated for sure. Because the crowd that is saw back then were eager to play with traditional music.
At the beginning, everything gone as it already planned. We get into track with the music choosen by Ece. We made our first dance accompaniment of it. After that, Ece's uncle appeared on the track to put our rings on our fingers. He made a beautiful speech and cut the ribbon between rings. And that's what we called engagement. The rest was formality to me.
And the shocker of the night: A traditional dance music started from background before Ece's uncle sit down to his chair. Suddenly, there was a movement in the crowd. People were coming on the track open arms. I picked a look at Ece, she was completely shocked. I hold her hand and said "do you wanna have a smoke?"
I probably consumed 5000 calories that night. I was on the track for at least 3 hours. I jumped, ran, threw hub etc. with the force of my buddies. Regarding Ece, she get used to musics and let things slide. She was dancing with tambourine when i last saw her.
That night came to an end with joy, thankfully. Ece didn't made a fuss about it. After engagemeny ceremony, we were one step away from our wedding: Henna night.
Your bride very pretty. Wish you always happy! :)
Thanks for your great wish :)
