Stoic thoughts #3
"If a person gave away your body to some passerby, you'd be furious. Yet you hand over your mind to anyone who comes along, so they may abuse you, leaving it disturbed and troubled. Have you no shame in that?"
-Epictetus
What I understood from here is the same old story we always hear, but yet not completely grasp, that the biggest enemy is ourselves.
Let us take an example so that we can understand better, let's say you want to go on a diet and you make it the first day and you are really proud, which you should be.
But then the next day you get the cravings for some pizza, sweets, that's the moment you have an inner conflict with yourself and have to think what are the benefits of each side.
In most cases, if you decide to go on a diet and have the cravings, you should stick with your diet because you consciously chose it, better plan a day where you can satisfy the cravings so that everybody wins.
You can also see in movies this example, like Fight Club(just so you know, I broke the first rule so pray for me), which is really awesome ofc and if you don't know what I'm talking about please watch the movie, it's a must.
