Of course you are right about those who debate about the two words, but in light of it a need is something we all have the same of we need food, we need clothing we need a roof over our head. Basic requirements and human rights are or should be our need, our need for good health anything in addition to this maybe should be a want or a desire to have.
I can see what you are trying to point out, and it's very interesting. Our needs maybe a staple, and the remains are just going to pile up on to desires or wants.
