My Mid Century Modern Obsession

in #life8 years ago

Let me start off by saying Hi! My name is CuteKat and I was told about steemit through a youtuber named CryptoBobby. I am a beginner in cryptos and have just started investing! So far the steemit community seems great, very friendly and supportive :)

My story starts out about a year and a half ago when I bought a sofa and bed frame from a girl on craigslist that was moving out of her apartment. I had originally gone to buy the queen bed frame only but when I got there she told me I could have the sofa for free if I wanted it because she had to be out that afternoon. Score free sofa!

The free sofa was how it all began... Instead of keeping the sofa I ended up selling it for $300 locally. This is where I did something different. Instead of spending the money on myself as I normally do, I took out my original investment of $100 (bed and sofa) for some reason folded the $200 in half and put it in my clutch. I then used that money to slowly buy and sell furniture until I stumbled upon a weird dresser that changed it all.

Unlike most of the items I have sold this one seemed different, and after doing some research I found it was a 1960's vintage piece done by a company called Lane and was a style known as brutalist. At the time I had been selling my dressers for about $100 and had picked this one up for $40. Instead of $100 I decided I would price this one much higher at $600 seeing how it seemed sought after. I had an offer of $500 with in an hour and promptly accepted it :) After a few months of struggling and being one of hundreds of resellers in generic markets I had finally found my niche, mid century modern furniture.

Since then my buying and selling of mid century modern items has turned into a full blown obsession. I have spent countless hours trying to learn about mcm as well as restoration techniques. My only rule is "don't fall in love" as I buy and sell. I have worked on and sold tons of mid century modern items and love every part of it.

Why mid century modern? It is simply stylish and timeless furniture, watch any television show or movie from today, or 10 years ago, or 40 years ago. All of the furniture styles in them are the same, mid century modern. Because of this it is always trendy and in demand, in fact whole stores such as West Elm, Restoration Hardware, and Ikea try to replicate these vintage styles. This is why mcm is popular and sells.

I have learned various tricks, tips, and methods for restoring furniture as well as ways for making more sales. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask and I will try to answer them if possible. If this post gets enough attention I will do a DIY on restoration and reselling. Thanks for reading :)
