I do the appliance trick you mentioned all the time. Works great with video games to. I get excited every time a friend gives me an xbox disk they scratched. Buy a new copy, put scratched disk in new box, return to wall mart and get a new copy then sell it on ebay for $15 bucks off. You get a fresh disk, and $50 bucks. Works great at Wal Mart.
