Dental advices-which toothbrush should you choose?
Hi. My name is Paul. I am probably the first dentist in the steemit community, so I want to share my knowledge with you, to make your life better.
As a dentist, I stay in close touch with many patient’s problems, mainly relevant with teeth. Major problems which I observe are: caries, plaque and tartar. How to deal with them? Let’s start with basics.
In this topic we are going to concentrate on toothbrushes:
- Why type of toothbrush is so important?
- Which one to choose? –manual or electric?
- If electric, should it be sonic, or other one?
- If manual, which one?
In so many questions, there are few simply answers.
1) Why type of toothbrush is so important?
the role of toothbrush in GENERAL HEALTH is more important, than you can suspect.
A Good one toothbrush with proper brushing technique = longer, healthier life
toothbrush is a device to remove the plaque from the surface of teeth, massage gingiva.
But why removing the plaque is so important?
Plaque, tartar=bacteria. Plaque causes caries and gingiva diseases. This bacteria’s in some cases can get across to circulation system, and with blood flowing can make inflammation in many organs inside ours bodies: lungs, kidneys, joints, or even endocardium causing HEART ATTACK or STROKE.
Caries also increase risk of DIABETES!
That’s why we should use the best devices, to prevent this diseases!
2) Which one to choose – manual or electric?
In 2013 in Warsaw, prominent Polish periodontology professors had an appointment were they discussed, which system: manual or electric is better one.
They evaluate: clinical efficiency and safeness of many types of electrical to each other and to manual toothbrushes in many aspects, like : reduction of the plaque, inflammation of gingiva, periimplantitis ( inflammation of the tissues around the implant), reduction of bacterial flora in alveolar pocket and influence on the hard tissues of the teeth ( enamel, dentin)
The Results are clear-cut:
- on over 200 (!) publications the most effectiveness in reducing the inflammation of the gingiva are the oscillating-rotating power toothbrushes also called 3D (the movement of the toothbrush are: pullsing, rotating and oscillating )
- All electric toothbrushes reduce more efficitively plaque than the manuals !
- Using electric toothbrushes reduces possibility of developing recessions or abrasion hard tissue of the tooth.
- conclusive results show that in short-time marks the oscillating-rotary toothbrushes are better than the sonic !!!
3) If electric, should it be sonic or other one?
- how we said in answer for a second question: oscillating-rotating toothbrushes are much more effective in reducing plaque and also much more reducing inflammation of the gingiva as well than sonic device,
- cost of the sonic and oscillating-rotating toothbrush is similar, so why not choose better one?
- anyway, sonic is still better choose than manual
4) If manual, which one?
- if you’re using manual toothbrush, use only soft one or medium. NEVER use hard. Why? Manual toothbrush with hard bristles only traumatize yours gingiva (causing recessions) and hard tissue of the tooth ( causing abrasions, non-caries cavity) and it won’t clean your tooth well.
- use toothbrush with bristles which are the same long – they will clean interdental spaces better
- remember to change your toothbrush maximum every 3 months!!
