Playing games the entire day..

People are under the impression that you are not actually working at all.
I cannot remember how many times I have heard this, “You IT Guys just sitting and playing games the entire day”. People fail to understand a lot of work, being done via remote support and part of IT support is not just strictly the errors they notice while working. Our duties are normally, proactively sorting out issues, before end users even notices it.

You Can Fix Any Electronic Device..

Friends, family and co-workers are under the impression you are some tech master and can fix any electronic devices from even if said devices does not even fall anywhere under tech.
Co-workers always wants you to fix their home computer devices instead of paying a computer company and
nine times out of ten the equipment is so outdated that you can basically not do anything with it.

Nerds only with a lack of Social Skills…

Hollywood has this nasty habit of portraying IT support in a very negative way, it’s normally some geeky person with no social skills that don’t know how to interact other people properly. In reality it's the opposite as we normally support from entry-level workers up to CEO levels and deal with many types of people and actually need social skills to properly communicate with them in a professional way.

Being lied to on a daily basis...

This is one of the things about working in IT support that took me some time to get used too.
It’s obvious people don’t like getting themselves into trouble and end up lying to cover up their own mistakes, which ends up making solving the issue much more difficult for the support person in the end.

As human beings we also from time make mistakes and won’t automatically think the worst of the people if there are more honest which makes our lives easier doing support.

There are many more examples, but these are just some of the ones that I dealt with the most.

So next time be more kind to your IT support people

Oh back in the days of desktop support, it's probably one of the most difficult customer facing jobs in the IT industry, you are really meant to know how to solve every problem on every device under the sun. People will sometimes get angry becuase they dont understand what went wrong and speaking to them even in layman terms would just blow over their heads.

I think this opinion of Nerd IT support is changing though, look around you @diebaasman. it's IT "Nerds" that are going to rule the world very soon and all those people that didn't take a moment to learn anything technical are falling behind the times very fast, even eSports is catching on, we have multi million dollar international comps just on Dota 2 and Counter Strike.

It's the world of Nerd today, so enjoy it.

Yes this is very true and why I am glad to be doing what I am doing.

Your skills are appreciated.

HaHa.

I actually don't mind the job I enjoy helping people, just that people don't always appreciate what we do when things just work, but when things don't go as planned then you their biggest enemy.

But I am sure any job has probably got their own issues. : )

being an desktop support engineer am also faced the same issues with my colleagues nice post

Haha I feel ur pain, but except for the minor issues the job is not that bad.
