Warren Buffett receives thousands each year. Around 22,000 in the last ten years, citizens who need money to pay their mortgages, the hospital bill, the education of their children and other accoutrements. To some it works, because in recent years dozens of these candidates have achieved their purpose, as published this month by The Boston Globe,

The letters arrive at http://www.letters.foundation/ but the person in charge of receiving them is not the Nebraska tycoon but his older sister, Doris, 88, recently moved to Boston. For years, this fairy godmother - she defines herself - has been tearing her brother's pocket to make hundreds of micro-donations around 4,800 dollars (for a total of 12 million dollars). The beneficiaries are "people trapped by debts".

The story of Doris and Warren Buffet started in 2006 when the magnate announced that they would donate part of his fortune - 30,000 million dollars - to the foundation of Bill Gates. At that moment the reception of letters began. Along with the Gates, the brothers were also the ones who launched the well-known Giving Pledge, where they ask the billionaires of the world to donate at least 50% of their assets; 155 have already committed by letter.

"I like to donate money wholesale and my sister to the retail mode," the billionaire has once commented. Because Doris does not exercise as a rich lady, she has no personal fortune. She opens her brother's letters and decides in each particular case. A task that he completes with his own charitable order, the Sunshine Lady Foundation.

The fact is that Doris has not been alone in the task. These years had a dozen collaborators, a kind of judicious evaluation committee that studied the cases, but with that of the move, the Globe has echoed that it searches for new examiners of letters in Boston and surroundings.

How does it work?

To examine the letters, Buffett prefers older people. "Someone with a more practical than critical sense". In fact, one of its functions is to verify the income and assets of the money plaintiffs.

As the needy, aspiring readers must apply by letter and demonstrate merit of life. Sometimes they exercise more as social workers, deriving petitions to public services. When donation is approved you recieve a call to let you know and in most cases give you some advice.
