My Knives - #09 Little Gyuto With a Stand
Hello dear Steeminas,
first of all, sorry for not making the Part II of the How to Make a Knife, it was my wife's birthday and I simply didn't have the time.
Until I do make the tutorial video, I'll show you this little jewel - a smaller Gyoto that I did with a magnetic stand.
It is a gift for a friend of mine so it was a bit of a relaxed build - no $ - no pressure :)
It really did come out quite nice, but enough of self-praise, first the stats and then build progression to the final product in a video.
Steel: 1095 - differential heat treatment, acid hamon
Handle (from the blade): +5000 YO abonos (bog oak), Corian and plum.
Lenght: blade 190mm, AO 320
Height: 57mm
Stand: same piece of abonos with cracks filled with died resin
Profile rough-outed pre heat treatment
Just out of the heat treatment - I always seem to forget to take a pic before HT so I can show how they look like with clay on
40 grit - clean and after a quick dip into acid
Done on the grinder - took her up to 400
Checking the hamon pre hand sanding
Hamon poping up at 800 grit hand sanded
Bedding the tang
This is done by coating the tang with beeswax and jamming it into the handle while glueing the handle. What this does is assures everything stays aligned during the glueing and making it possible to remove the knife in order to profile the handle.
Dry fit before the final etch
And she's done
Thank you for stopping by! As always, if you have something to say - just drop a comment below...
