Is it a lack of motivation which makes people stay inactive?

Motivation in general can be a reason people lack the drive to do anything at all.

But there are far more specific reasons as to why we avoid particular things. After all lack of motivation can stem from a variety of things, but it’s knowing what’s what and what specifically is dragging you down that’s important.

Below I’ve included some articles I wrote on overcoming excuses, fear, and doubts. I’ll explain them in detail right below how they get in the way and drain motivation.

Excuses

Excuses drain motivation as we devote time to thinking about why we don’t want to do something rather than doing it. We justify our reasons by looking at past examples of our failures and how they pertain to what we are currently doing.

Although they can be compelling, what you have to remember with excuses is this:

You are pulling things from the past and the past doesn’t define you.

Sure you made mistakes in the past and they are part of personality, you went through it after all. But that’s not a permanent character trait that you have. We can change ourselves and our image any time we like.

Fear

Fear stalls motivation and action due to what it can do. It can create doubts and excuses in our hearts along with other things too that keep us pinned down.

That is, if we let fear do that to us.

For me, I see fear as a mentor. A very harsh one at that.

It’s that sense of uneasiness and it’s a clear barrier that you can overcome over time. In a lot of cases it’s something where you simply need to take action and have an ironclad plan.

Doubt

Doubt slows motivation by us hesitating and wondering if we are up to the task. If you’ve been stuck because you peg your abilities as “mediocre” or “decent” then that is where you will be forever.

I know this from experience. All my life I’ve been a B and C student through school and university. Very rarely did I ever get an A despite people telling me how smart I was.

What happened was I pegged my abilities as someone average and not all that remarkable and then justified it again and again by the test results I got over the years.

The source of it all was I doubted my abilities to achieve something grand despite what others were telling me.

These Things Stall Us

In the end, excuses, fear, and doubt stall out motivation and we drain our energy through them by dwelling on them. The reasons can be vast but generally speaking you can pinpoint them by looking at the themes they bring.

Excuses - You find yourself justifying your abilities through logical events in a negative way.
Fear - You feel stuck with no ability to move. When you hit a certain road block, you clam up.
Doubt - You are routinely placing a limit on your abilities or achievements. Think of it like you are downplaying your abilities and success.
