Happy Mother's Day!

in #life5 years ago (edited)

With Mother’s Day right around the corner I’ve been reminiscing a lot this week about my own Mom. It’s very strange for me to think that she wasn’t much older than I am now when I moved away from hometown of Columbus, Ohio to St. Paul, Minnesota in 1995.

Although we’ve lived halfway across the country from one another for the past twenty four years, I’m happy to say that we’ve remained very close. We talk at least once a day on the phone and visit, face-to-face a few times a year.

I have her to thank for countless things. She’s one of the main components of my earliest memories - reading Dr. Seuss books to me on the couch, digging in the dirt with her in our backyard garden, helping her make Christmas cookies.

My brother Curt, me, and my Mom in the late 70’s.

"Those scratchy marks there on the wall, They show how short I used to be, They rise until they get this tall, And Mama keeps reminding me, The way my Dad would take his pen, And as I stood there, stiff and straight, He’d put a ruler on my head, And mark the spot and write the date, She says that it’s my history, But I don’t understand at all. Just why she cries each time she sees those scratchy marks there on the wall.” ~ Shel Silverstein

She taught me so many things, by her example, that have made me who I am today - integrity, respect, honesty, humility, and patience. As an adult, and after having some experience in the world, I see how extremely rare these traits are. Ask anyone who knows her and they’ll tell you she embodies all of those.

Even at age forty-eight I’m still learning from her. Without the firm emotional and spiritual foundation she provided me with my life would have gone off the rails several times.

It’s been one of the greatest joys of my life to get to know my Mom as an adult, to get to see her humorous side, learn her deep beliefs and opinions, and to be able to spoil her a little bit.

We have no control of time and as we get to a certain age we realize that it passes far too quickly. What we do have a say in is how we exist in and spend each moment. I choose to relish in the great memories, make the most of today, and look forward to many more tomorrows.

I love you with all my heart Mom, Happy Mother's Day! I'm so grateful for your presence in my life.

Happy Mother’s Day to all you Moms out there (you have the most important job in the world)!

Thank you for reading,

Eric

You are very lucky to have a mother who loves you very much. Mother is the most meritorious person in our lives. You are a famous writer in America now and Its happen because your mother always supports you. I saw your childhood photo. You looked so cute, Eric. And I hope your mother stays healthy always. Enjoy your day, Eric.

Thank you @elianaelisma! I am extremely lucky. My life would not have been the same if it wasn't for her support. Have a wonderful weekend!

It is so wonderful to see you and your lovely Mother in a photo together.
She did a good job. When I met my husband I asked him how he felt about his Mother. I think it is important to honor her.

Thank you @rebeccabe! I'm traveling down to see her within the next few months, I can wait to see her and my father. I hope you had a great weekend!

Wonderful. BTW: I stopped over to your website over the weekend and it quite impressive. I really like the tribute you wrote to your wonderful father. :)

@ericvancewalton, Very interesting story I just read from your article. Actually every succeed story was behind great mother. Since we was born to the planet our mother got huge try to well protect us with feed. I'm really proud about you because you're lucky to be her son and her lucky also like you.
Happy mother's Day.

My mom lives fairly close to me. She got remarried and my situation with her is not perfect anymore. It's tough when you have to deal with another person. However, he's not the worst guy ever and sometimes we get along. I'm glad that I live close to her so I can spend time with her as she gets older. As for mothers day itself well I'll be working a significant portion of that day. Mothers day in a restaurant is just absolutely worse than you can imagine. So I'm hoping I won't have to be there for that long. I can tell you everyone is going to bring their kids and all of those kids are going to need high chairs and we're going to basically have people that request a 12 top table with 3 adults and 9 kids. Stuff like that is going to happen all day long and that 12 top table which will take up 2 hours of our time will leave something like $8.00 on a $300 meal. That's how it goes on Mother's Day. I hope you and your mother have a great day.

Thanks @jeezzle and I wish the same to you and yours. That situation can get complicated. I've grown close to my stepson over the past few years but it took some time. We have a lot of friends in the restaurant industry and I have a lot of respect for people in that line of work. Dealing with the public in any capacity, I'm sure is tough these days. Is it just me or do people seem to be so much more demanding and entitled than they used to be?

Mothers are our earthly angels, unarmed warriors, the heart of the house, the queen of our life. Just like you, I have the joy of having my mother alive and of having shared with her incredible and unforgettable moments. My mother is my friend, my other self, my spinal column. Cheers to her and to all mothers in the world.

I agree, @nancy! Thank you and I hope you and your Mom have a great Mother's Day!

What a great influence she made on your life. You have always been cute and she is one amazing being too; incredibly cute. I really miss mine. She passed away in 2009. Happy Mother's Day to all mothers out there. Their labour will never be in vain. Amen.

Thank you my friend and I'm sorry you lost your mother so young!

Thank you so much sir.

Beautiful blog on mother day. Nice family pic.
Happy mother day

A mother is one of the precious treasure I am opportune to have in this life. Her love, her care, her presence, her hard work just to make me happy. Each day I think about her sacrifice for me, I surely must make her proud oneday no matter what it will take

The mother's heart loves her children in all situations, ever since, as one beautiful and unforgettable day of life, mother takes her baby in her arms. The desire to raise a child that will justify all the hopes and expectations, from that day on, occupies all the thoughts of the mother, and only the child now completely belongs to her loving maternal heart. Thank you so nicely wrote about mother. Thank you for sharing.

Mother love is always so special it can't be described in words its a feeling :)
