Possibly you have just explained the Fermi Paradox.
Why risk your only body by going somewhere in person when you can experience it by VR?
As VR becomes more and more real and less and less virtual there will become less and less reason to take that risk. Full immersion, (via neural interface perhaps)
Eventually, sooner than we would expect, Virtual Reality will be indistinguishable in quality from Lucid Dreaming.
I expect that on the whole, it will benefit society. I also expect that there will be bitching and complaining.

Yeah, I believe Elon Musk is a large believer in this theory and believes there is a good chance we are living in a simulation.
I would go as far as to say that it is highly unlikely that we're not.
