How to Make Elderberry Cough Syrup
Hello everyone I wanted to share this recipe that was given to me as a gift. I believe everyone should have the power to make their own health products!
It's the time of year where the sick bug is going around, so I hope some of you find this useful! Herbal cough syrups promote immune system health, and elderberry in particular is antiviral. It also tastes nice and sweet, so children love it as well.
To get started, you will need:
1 cup of dried elderberries
1-2 tbs of fresh or dry ground ginger
5 cloves
1 cinnamon stick or 2 tbs or cinnamon chips
2 cups of water
(optional additional ideas)
1 tbs Dried orange peel
2 cardamom pods
1/2 tsp peppercorns
you will also need a pot, a strainer, cheesecloth, a closed container to store it in, and a lot of honey to make it a syrup.
Put all of the ingredients into a pot and bring to a boil. Once it is boiling, cover it and let it simmer for 20 minutes. after it is done simmering, pour the liquid through a strainer and cheesecloth into a large measuring glass. Based on how much liquid there is, add in 1 part honey (generally 1 cup) and mix well.
you can now store your elderberry syrup into a closed container and store into the fridge! The honey also works as a preservative so the syrup should last a long time and will be ready whenever you need it!
The recommended dosage when you are sick is 1 spoonful every 30-60 minutes. You can also take a spoonful or so a day to strengthen your immune system. Get creative, and mix it in a drink such as lemonade.
