First time on choppy water and it was really fun!

We decided to take a trip for the two of us to Sandpoint Idaho for a weekend away from the kids. Only an hour drive from home Sandpoint sits on the shore of Lake Pend Oreille, the fifth deepest lake in America. The lake has a US Navy acoustic research lab that has developed and worked on different radar and sounding methods over the years since the lake is 1200 ft deep in some areas, so they can take a submarine down into the depths.

Yesterday afternoon we had lunch at Spuds and then drove over to the beach. There were nearly no other people out on the water or on the beach. We put our kayaks in off one of the day use docks and then went and tooled around. The wind was blowing a fair amount and the water was smooth in the protected area that we launched from.

Once we got around the point of the beach the water got a lot more choppy with wind blown waves pushing south. It was really fun to paddle against the wind and waves which was surprisingly easy. The "No Wake" buoys were a good marker to paddle to and we roamed around a few of them. It was a good upper body work out though and after we had gone a little over half a mile we decided to head back towards the docks.

After paddling back towards were we put in we went upstream in the creek which runs right under the downtown Sandpoint shops and restaurants. Under the Hwy 95 bridge over the water is an area nearest the city parking lot that has some really cool graffiti that you can just see. There is some pretty nifty art there and I wish I could have gotten a bit better shots of it.

Downtown Sandpoint's waterfront area is a nice place to walk the paths and during the summer months the city is hoping pretty well with many vacationers. The mountains in the right side of the picture that can be seen to the left of the bridge is Schweitzer Mountain and the ski area. It is a very popular ski area in this part of the Inland Northwest.

Heading home today and we plan to stop along the way and put our kayaks in the water again. Thinking about running around Priest River where it ties into the Pend Oreille River. If parking is free we will stop there or maybe a little farther east near Laclede. We will see how we feel when we get there.
