The internet echo chamber

in #life6 years ago

I didn't get the full picture until I aggregated a lot of RSS and Atom feeds. Up to a hundred or so you seem to be getting diverse topics, when I got to a few thousand the problem started, around 30 000 the diversity is drowned out and you get hundreds of articles talking about the same thing. It seems perfectly normal and to be expected but if you take your time to think about it there are hundreds of really interesting angles we don't usually talk about. They've covered at least one of them in this video: how major platforms roll.

There are hundreds of really interesting angles we don't usually talk about

The hardest one to ask yourself requires you to ignore your personal bias: What are the topics and subjects that we should be reading and talking about collectively? I think the answer could be generalized as anything that improves our person and our lives. This both in the large scale of becoming more worldly. I mean, there are hundreds of countries in the world with billions of people but topics we invest our attention in come from a crazy tiny group of people from a crazy tiny number of countries. And the small scale of learning something towards a practical skill we can use in our private lives or in our work. There have to be thousands of jobs, skills and research projects involving interesting processes and interesting results.

Another one to ask yourself is: What are the topics we systemically ignore? There for example is a great amount of suffering and injustice in the world that would simply vaporize if we collectively took notice of it. But then we see a picture of starving children and quickly close the page. In the docu Outfoxed they describe a term used internally at fox news: Eliminative journalism. This is a formula by which to create public opinion not by covering specific topics but by ignoring ones specifically. Like the big social platforms there isn't just OUR accidental collective stupidity but there is an actual CONSPIRACY to design our collective narrative.

Ill do one more but there are many: What can we do to improve the situation? I think over the years you've had enough suggestions what to spend your time on. Close your eyes or look around the room then pick something, search google or youtube or whatever platform you use and follow YOUR OWN SUGGESTIONS of what YOU should be spending YOUR time on.
