One of my worst neighborhood fears appears to be coming true (Vietnam)
It's a fact of life in the near-beach areas of Danang, Vietnam: Eventually, everything is going to have some sort of construction take place on it. That's just the way that it is.
For a long period of time I felt as though the vacant plot of land opposite my condo/apartment was going to be safe from this because according to legend (and confirmed by the guards at the gates) there is a high ranking government or army person that lives in this complex that I can see from my balcony.
Well whatever negotiations have gone into keeping that land vacant appear to have finally ended and well, now we are going to have some "Bring the noise" right outside my window likely for a very long period of time.

It starts with a trackhoe and a hauling truck and then you have a grace period of some sort while you wait and see what happens next. At the moment we aren't 100% guaranteed that anything large is going to happen here and I have my fingers crossed that the powerful government person complained about the brush and how it attracts rats or something, rather than this clearing being a preparation for something really big going vertical.

This bit of land is next to an 8 story building that took ages to build so at least from a structural standpoint, there is no reason why whatever is going up there couldn't be exactly the same thing. It will likely only take them today and perhaps part of tomorrow to complete this clearing of the land and then we will just have to wait and see what else turns up.

That mini brick wall there is a funny part of Vietnamese culture. That was never intended to be a structure but you can find these all over the place in this country. That is a boundary wall to indicate where the property begins and ends. In the west we bury something metallic or just have a stone that indicates a property line but in Vietnam they go ahead and mark the entire thing thus making it impossible for encroachment to occur without some sort of Mission Impossible reconstruction of an entire brick wall under the cover of darkness.

Remember my hopeful theory about them perhaps just clearing the land? Well that is unlikely to be true since they appear to be digging in a straight line towards the back and not clearing all of the land and this is more likely to be simply a partial sale of the land and the other part will become the new garbage dump.
This could seriously be bad for my day to day life but since I live on a high floor it will be less terrible for me than it will be for the people who live on the lower floors.
I feel as though the owners of our building were aware that noise was going to be a problem here so I am thankful that we have double-pane glass on all windows and therefore this does a reasonably good job of keeping the noise pollution outside. It isn't military grade gear though, for the people on the lower floors who are going to have the banging and clanging going on right outside their windows, they are going to feel the pain of this pretty badly, likely to the point of many of them moving out.
Some of the people I know on the lower floors have already committed to moving out should ground be laid and in particular if they dig a deep hole in the ground. When they do that, it is indicative that they are building underground parking as well and you don't do that for a small building.

There is one little piece of silver lining on this cloud though. The very moment that they clear away all of this, Nadi is going to have an absolute field day sniffing, peeing, and pooping all over that land. Since her years are limited on this planet, that will bring her joy and that being the case, I suppose I can put up with the noise that the inevitable construction was always going to bring.
