01 August Today's term from psychology is the G I Joe Fallacy.
The G I Joe Fallacy: each episode of the 1980s G I Joe cartoon series ended with a cheesey public service announcement that concluded, "Now you know, and knowing is half the battle." The problem with knowing our cognitive biases is that we still fall victim to them. In fact, knowing them does not help much to overcome them at all. Ironically, even knowing about the G I Joe Fallacy does essentially nothing to help overcome our cognitive biases. What you consciously know does not control your behavior. However, it is possible using some well-known techniques to gain a degree of control over many of your cognitive biaes by making a sustained effort.
