1620 – The Mayflower started her voyage to North America.

1810 – With the Grito de Dolores, Father Miguel Hidalgo began Mexico’s fight for independence from Spain.

1847 - Shakespeare Birthplace Trust bought The Bard's birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon.

1858 - The first overland mail for California was inaugurated.

1863 – Robert College of Istanbul-Turkey, the first American educational institution outside the United States, was founded by Christopher Robert, an American philanthropist.

1880 – The Cornell Daily Sun printed its first issue in Ithaca, New York. The Sun is the nation’s oldest, continuously-independent college daily.

1906 - Roald Amundsen discovered Magnetic South Pole.

1931 - A Blimp was moored to the Empire State Building in NYC.

1959 – The first successful photocopier, the Xerox 914, was introduced in a demonstration on live television from New York City.

1966 – The Metropolitan Opera House opened at Lincoln Center in New York City with the world premiere of Samuel Barber's opera, Antony and Cleopatra.

1877 – Jacob Schick, American-Canadian inventor and businessman, patented the first electric razor and started the Schick Dry Shaver, Inc. razor company. Schick became a Canadian citizen in 1935 to avoid an investigation by the Joint Congressional Committee on Tax Evasion & Avoidance after he moved most of his wealth to a series of holding companies in the Bahamas.

1898 – H.A. Rey, American author (Curious George).

1924 – Lauren Bacall, American actress. (was you ever bit by a dead bee?)

1925 – B.B. King, American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer.

1926 – Tommy Bond, American actor noted for being the first actor to appear onscreen as Superman's pal Jimmy Olsen, having portrayed the character in the film serials Superman (1948) and Atom Man vs. Superman (1950).

1927 – Jack Kelly, American actor (Maverick, Forbidden Planet).

1928 – Rex Trailer, American television host, actor, and singer.

1930 – Anne Francis, American actress best known for her role in the science fiction classic Forbidden Planet (1956) and for having starred in the television series Honey West (1965–1966) which was the first TV series with a female detective character's name in the title. She also appeared twice in The Twilight Zone, including the title character in "Jess-Belle" and as Marsha White in "The After Hours".

1956 – David Copperfield, American magician.

1960 – Kurt Busiek, American comic book writer notable for his work on the Marvels limited series, his own title Astro City, and his four-year run on Avengers.

1966 – Wil McCarthy, American science fiction novelist, president and co-founder of RavenBrick a solar technology company, and the science columnist for Syfy. McCarthy popularized the Wellstone, or Programmable matter concept.
