Why Mind over Matter Actually Works

Is mind over matter actually a thing? I believe it is. We are so used to taking our mind for granted that we don't realize how powerful it really is and tend to underestimate the ability we have to manifest things from our thoughts.

Sounds crazy? Consider this - everything single thing that you do in your life is the result of a thought. When you get hungry and decide to eat something - you started with a thought " Hmm... I should eat something" and ended with putting something in your mouth. Without having put any thought into it - that food would have never made it to your mouth. In other words simply by thinking about it - you caused a chain reaction of events that lead to the manifestation of you eating something - and it's like this for everything in our lives.

Power of the Mind

Understanding how powerful our mind is can go a long way towards creating the life that we want to lead. So many people are held back by invisible barriers called beliefs. We believe that we could not get that promotion , we believe that person would never date us , we believe that that we could never be as healthy as that guy riding a bike up a mountain. But all of these people doing these things believe that they can do these things and so they do. That's the miracle of it - once we tell our mind that we want to do something - the mind will find a way to make it happen even if its failure. Tell yourself that you will fail and you have just given yourself instructions and permission to fail .

Our subconscious doesn't know the difference between what is real and what isn't - start to think about something very scary and your heart rate will start to increase - your body is experiencing a physical effect even though there is no real threat - but because your subconscious doesn't know the difference, your body reacts physically to it. That's why we love to get frightened at a scary movie - or shed a tear when something powerfully emotional happens in movie - we can empathize with those feelings even though we are not technically experiencing them.

Real world Application

So how can we apply to this to a real world situation? How do we overturn the cart and break free of the shackles that are holding us back from our true potential? Start to think about what changes you want to see in your life. Spend some time really imagining what it would feel like. Visualize what life would be like in this new paradigm - how would you spend the day? who would you spend time with? what would you be dressed like? Where would you go ? who would you do business with ?

Once you have this concept in your head hang on to it. Add to it - give it more detail and paint it with more colors. Think about it every single day. What this is doing is training your subconscious to seek out this life style and it will start working on ways to achieve your goals. If you were starving on an island and had a coconut but didn't know how to open it- your mind would keep working full time to figure a way to get it open and the thought would eventually come to you.

You need to figure out how to open your own coconut. It's OK if you don't know how - you just need to think about it and ponder over it. You will start to think about what tools you have at your disposal and what tools you would need to make it happen. Then you could figure out how you would get the tools you need - maybe the tools are education, or connections or they are literally tools for a trade craft that you don't have but would like to have. Everything on this planet is possible - everything you tell yourself you can do is being done by thousands of other people everyday. If you start telling yourself that you can be one of those people than you can start doing it to.

Not Some Magic Pill

This is not magic or hocus pocus. I'm not talking about some new age stuff. This is simply the way things are. It's not going to happen just by thinking about it alone - we have to really contemplate on how would get there. Our brain is a computer and we are giving it instructions to carry out - if you tell your brain that you're going to work in a factory the rest of your life , or that you are going to poor forever- by golly - guess what you've programmed your brain for? We can see it in all the little things we do - get up to go to the bathroom - scratch an itch - grab a beer - all things that started as a thought in our head and ended with a physical manifestation - so why couldn't we apply this to the bigger things on our lives?

A mentor of mine was going through a life crisis when his wife had was diagnosed with cancer. When he asked the doctor what the most successful patients were doing to get better - the doctor replied that the most successful recoveries came from patients with positive attitudes. Those who felt doomed to death didn't have as high of a survival rate. He and his wife are both very positive people - in fact he is a motivational speaker. She actually recovered and is still living today.

Summary

In a nutshell - I'm saying that in order to move forward and achieve the goals we set for ourselves - we need to believe that we can do it and then start using our mind as a tool to help us attain those goals. When people say that cannot do something it just means that they do not want to do it enough to actually learn how to do it. People do what they want to do and their lives are a result of all the decisions that lead up to that point.

Many people will use excuses like " I'm tired after work" or "I don't have time to do that". If you work 8 hours a day and you sleep 8 hours a day - that still gives you 8 hours a day to work towards your goals. That's an extra 40 hours a week you have to spend on making your life into what you want. Why couldn't you set 2 -3 hours of that time aside to work towards something that will bring you fulfillment?

I tend to contemplate on things a lot and in doing so many thoughts come my mind. During these times - I cant help but to wonder- who is this voice in my head? Who is this that keeps bullying me and telling me that I'm not good enough or that I cant do it? It's the programming that has already been pout into place - but guess what? we can update our system with new instructions. It's hard at first because we are not used to it - a lot like driving - when you first learned to drive there were so many things to be aware of - but after a while it becomes second nature to you and you don't have to think about it as much - it just comes naturally.

Creating successful habits in our life can be the same - once you get used to to doing it on a regular basis - it becomes second nature. Mind over matter works. Start to look at things from a different perspective - from a standpoint that says "I can do it!" - you know why? Because you can.

I appreciate that. It's a good encouragement not to give up. I hadn't read your article yet, but I also recently wrote on a similar topic. This is a huge part of getting ahead though. We have to give ourselves permission to succeed. If we're so used to being stuck or broken, it's hard to get fixed. If our mind believes we're going to stay there, it's going to work to achieve that goal. The good news is we'll reach our goals. The bad news is that if the goals are bad ones, we'll still get there. So we have to set good goals for ourselves.

Thanks for sharing. It reminds me of when Arnold Schwarzenegger said he use to have pictures on the wall of body builders who he wanted to look like and he kept telling his mind "I can look like that if I want". Seemed to work for him.

That's a great example! A lot of people also use dream boards where they put a whiteboard on the wall and draw some of the things they want or put pictures of things they want on it so they can be reminded of it regularly to help keep him focused... I have one in a few things on it are checked off

That's a good idea, I can see how that could work. I think I will give that a try.
