MY LAPTOP IS DYING, I NEED SOME ADVICE ABOUT BUYING A LAPTOP.

in #life7 years ago

I am having a hard time with my laptop. It is 5 years old, hubby bought it for me for a Christmas present. Its been very reliable, well up until the last few months.

Firstly the power lead kept falling out, So i bought a new one, this one was OK for a few weeks then started falling out. I have had to tape it in with electrical tape.

Now its started turning its self off whilst i am busy, i am having to re load it a number of times, its starting to really get on my nerves. I think it may be time to go buy a new one.

I think it may be time to go and buy a new one. It would be really helpful that if you go buy a new one the shop your purchasing off transfers everything from your old laptop to your new one meaning you can get started straight away.

Maybe a shopping trip is needed this weekend, a new laptop then a couple of hours free time so i can sort it out.

Have you any advice what to go for, what i should be looking for... I know enough about them to get me by but need help with what i should be looking for.

Thank you @son-of-satire

there is also a reddit space for PCs. Most people on there are extremely helpful. Usually they want to to know what you'll be using it for and how much you're wanting to spend and then they'll give you a lot of great ideas. I think thats the place that actually helped me pickout/find the laptop I bought a few years ago.

Thank you. I appreciate your help :)

Sorry to hear about your laptop. Good thing is that you are not waiting till it died.

I like to backup my photos to the cloud. I use Google Photos which is free and automatic. I have used it for years and never had a problem.

Know exactly what you plan to use it for. IOW no need to spend up for a gaming machine just to do Steeming for example. Really today you can get a decent machine without breaking the bank! Good luck!

I have backed it up, will have to go on Monday for a new one, hopefully this one lasts that long :)

Used to be a big Windows buff, but now I say go Mac and you’ll Never go Bac

They are super expensive though :(

You are right about that, and I still think it is worth it in terms less probs, more secure and better performance. I actually bought a refurbished one on Ebay. It was an older model, still expensive but so worth it

I will take a look but doubt i could afford one :)

sorry for your laptop. I can't give you advice, but I resteemed your post hoping someone else can help you ^_^

Thank you, I really appreciate that :)

I really hate it when it comes to the end of the life of a laptop. So much personal stuff on it, it becomes a best friend.
I have to admit that I don't back mine up as much as I should...my last laptop had quite a lot of my poetry on it, plus two plays I had written for a theatre group, and most of a screenplay. I was devastated when I couldn't get into it anymore, it burned out. I lost it all.
It would be great if the store one buys the next laptop from would upload all the content, but I haven't found one yet that does.
I wish you luck when you aquire your new laptop. Dying to see if you find a good store that wiil help you set you up.
Oh, and a big hi Karen!

Hi. We need a hospice for laptops. Somewhere they can go and get cleaned out and transferred before they pass over to laptop heaven.
That's sad losing personal stuff you must have been gutted.
I bought an external harddrive, i transfer most of my things on to there but i know this laptop, i can find my way around easily. I really don't want to start again especially with Windows 10 as didn't like it so restored windows 8..

I now transfer my stuuff onto a hard drive, although not as often as I should.
I didn't like windows 10 at all...it made my laptop sluggish and glitchy. So many people have said how it ruined their laptops. I somehow feel that it was deliberate.

That's what i am dreading as all new laptops have Windows 10. worst one ever.

I wonder if it just needs a bit of a clean out, or maybe a reinstall?

I have tried cleaning and reinstalling, no change :(
