How much should the opinions of others about me be used to determine how I live my life? Why?

If I were in your shoes, I'd say as little as possible. People's opinions will always differ and if you chose to base your actions and decisions on what people think about you, you'd end up a confused being with no clear direction. I think you should have heard the saying that you cannot please everybody. It's the truth.
> You can please some people every time. You can please everyone sometimes. However, you cannot please everyone every time.
No matter how good you work towards acceptance, there will always be those who think you should act differently. Variety of beliefs and opinions is what makes the human race unique. Not everyone sees with the same light. People come from different backgrounds, had different upbringing, have different norms and values. You therefore cannot expect that they'd all have a collective opinion of what's right and what's not.
You should base your decisions on what you perceive as right. If you have a choice to make, let those who have proven to have a track record of good advice tell you what to do. Go with only the decisions that would ensure you don't lose your sleep at night. Life is too short, too delicate to be thinking about everyone's opinions, every time.
