LVX - What Do These Letters Mean?
The meaning of LVX is complicated. It is not just the word itself, and it is a word, but it is also the significance of the word and even the letters themselves that make up the word. So, based on the writings of other authors, let me try and explain.
LUX = Light
By itself, the word LVX means Light. In Latin, the letter "U" was originally written as a "V" because it was based on the most familiar style of writing at the time which was stone inscriptions. If you look at LVX and keep the writing style in mind, it is understandable that LVX was actually LUX which does means "Light".
But, it does not refer to the same light we experience when we turn on a light switch. Here, we are talking about 'Divine Light'.
In many religions, light was the first aspect created. In fact, in the Christian Bible, the first words spoken by God are "let there be light". In this case, this 'divine light' was more directed toward the non "objectiveness" of everything else. It could be seen as the beginning of things without the knowledge of "things." It also defined both the original essence and the ultimate limitations of the universe.
Now, go turn on a light switch and think about that…
The Veils of Negative Existence
The nature of God has been described by Kabbalists as "The Veils of Negative Existence," and include:
- Ain or "No-thing" - Ain can't truly be described because it is just raw "Negation" which is the root of Non-Existence. It does not represent physical forms or even the ideas that characterize physical forms. It is not even the concept of an idea or even the notion of what it means "to exist". It truly is indescribable. Even saying it is indescribable is wrong because it is not that either.
- Ain Soph or "limitlessness" - Ain Soph begins the process through which the unmanifest becomes the manifest. It is the first aspect that can be described as it conveys upon the raw Negation or 'No-thing' an idea of no limitation (without limits). And, just by the fact there is an idea of something, it helps establish the concept of duality. Although the Negation is still "No-thing", it does at the very least form the meaning of "No-Thing" and its opposite.
- Ain Soph Aur or "limitless light" - Ain Soph Aur can be seen as the first point of conscious awareness in the limitless sea of "No-Thing" which is Ain through the understanding of Ain Soph.
So, this process goes from having no description or thought of any kind to a point from which consciousness can begin. How this relates to LVX or divine light is due to the fact that this process consists of varying degrees of pure light.
If you did go to your light switch a moment ago to contemplate what divine light means, try doing it again but this time add the ideas behind Ain, Ain Soph, and Ain Soph Aur to your contemplation and try and come to terms with all of it between the moment you flick the switch and just before the light is evident in the room.
The Death/Rebirth Cycle
Now, we have the culmination of it all. The three letters themselves are Kabalistically linked to the Death-Rebirth Cycle.
- L - Isis Mourning (Osiris was slain by Set)
- V - Apophis Triumphant (the Rule of Death)
- X - Osiris Risen (dead-yet-alive, to rule in the new order)
According to The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn:
"Many mystics go so far as to say that this cycle is the only dynamic evident in nature, as the direct interactions of all forces are governed by it. Here we see two mutually-opposed forces which interact to create a new, "elevated" state or force."
Dead but reborn in an elevated state.
This is a similar view to those found in Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel's "Thesis-Antithesis-Synthesis" model, George Gurdjieff's "Law of Threes," and Buckminster Fuller's "60-degree zero-vector matrix". As is obvious, we are not talking about a real death, but rather a metaphor for a transformative process.
So, taking everything above into consideration, the meaning of LVX as it relates to "Divine Light," "Ain, Ain Soph, and Ain Soph Aur," and the Death/ Rebirth Cycle can be stated as:
