Advantages of having a roommate

First things first, it has become clear that living in Madrid by yourself it’s something people below 35 simply can’t afford. Why? It’s not a matter of age, in spite of what you might think. People nowadays move in together, meaning the first thing you need to be independent and live by yourself is... a roommate! Over the last few years, any kind of expense has been thought of as something two people have to share. That way, living standards and purchasing power will definitely improve for the better.

However, living by yourself has become a luxury almost no young worker can afford. So, if you have your doubts about sharing an apartment with someone, that’s okay. Bearing that in mind, I want to lift you up your spirits and put your mind at ease, thus, I will be enumerating all the advantages you will be able to enjoy once you move in with a roommate.

1-A new roommate is a new potential friend

Many people are scared of moving in with someone they don’t know. If you are, my advice is the following: ask your close friends if someone they know is looking for a roommate. That way you can at least be sure this is a person your friend recommends. This means you two will probably hit it off instantly. Having a roommate leaves the door open for a friendship that will definitely flourish between you two. In fact, that friendship will not only be between you two, because you also have to take into account your friends as well as their friends. Getting to know new people will improve your social life and change it for the better.

2-You can look after each other

Moving out of your parents house is always a nerve-racking moment. Thus, having someone that is experiencing this at this very moment or having someone that has already experienced this will be good for us. Basically, we won’t be alone and there won’t be room for panicking if you are lucky and you have a roommate.

Imagine your roommate gets sick. You can be there for them: cook (make them soup), be nice, go to the chemist and, all in all, help them in any way you can. This goes both ways and it’s just a tiny example of how great it is to have a roommate.

3-Forgetting the keys is no longer a problem

Are you the forgetful kind? Don’t worry because having a roommate means having someone that can help you out. If you forget your key, you won’t lock yourself out, which is a great relief. If you are quite organised and you never ever get distracted, you can be the one that saves the day when your roommate locks themselves out.

4-You have a bigger budget if you want to decorate the apartment

Isn’t it great thinking about furniture you always wanted that now you can actually have? All this because you have a roommate that will invest their money when it comes to interior decorating, which means you can decorate and save money.

5-Sharing WiFi, TV, Spotify Netflix and so on

If you are a film fanatic, a music lover, a fan of TV series or TV in general and, last but not least, if you need WiFi (obviously) now you have someone that will probable like some of this things or all of them and will be willing to pay for them too. Again, saving money! Also, bear in mind that sharing is caring!
