Sam Smith: the voice we can't stop listening to

The world is a better place since we have artists like Sam Smith on the picture. As a music fan I firmly believe that everyone should learn a little bit more about his story, music career, how everything started for him… I think this is a story worth-telling because it is an inspiring and motivational one. Let’s begin our journey.

IN THE LONELY HOUR

One could say the story begins in May 19, 1992. Why? Because that is when Samuel Frederick Smith was born. From an early age, he started vocal training lessons with a jazz singer. His parents made this happen because they knew he was gifted the minute he sang one of Whitney Houston’s songs. At the age of 12 he had up to 6 different managers but somehow these opportunities didn’t quite make him famous yet.

His big break came after he was featured on Latch, Disclosure’s 2012 single. Sam Smith decided at this point to release one of his songs: Lay Me Down in early 2013. He then released an EP called Nirvana. In February, 2014, Sam Smith was at the top of the U.K. charts with Money on my Mind. The whole album, called In the Lonely Hour, was released in May, 2014.

This album, as Sam Smith has stated several times over the years, was about “a guy he fell in love with that didn’t love me back”. He took that unrequited love and made an album because he wanted to sing about it. Love comes in many ways and it doesn’t have to be reciprocated for it to be real. It’s just another type of love.

In my opinion, this first record is really inspiring and brave because Sam Smith opens up about his emotions and it’s brutally honest, which could’ve been hard for him. He had to open up about whom he loved, which meant sharing with the world he is gay. As Sam said back in 2014, the emotions are what’s important and not who he chooses to love.

However, we sadly live in a world that hasn’t grasped the concept #LoveisLove. The first two songs that come to mind in which he is bluntly honest about loving a man are Like I Can and Leave Your Lover. But there are many others. All in all, I find this record inspiring and incredibly brave.

IN THE THRILL OF IT ALL

What a great way to celebrate this 2017 coming to an end with a brand new album… November is here and so is Sam Smith’s second album. And it will be worth the wait. Why? Well, as Sam confessed on Ellen and on James Corden’s show, The late late show, Sam is no longer single nor is he “not good at one night stands”.

Sam opened up about how he has been with several guys since 2014 and how he is now very much in love and in a relationship. What I find truly special about the Grammy Winner and famous British singer is that, after his first album, he went back to real, normal life and decided to experience it to the fullest. And write about it. I think this second album will be about new types of love. What I’m most intrigued by is the fact that there is one song about his current relationship.
