There is a book and a movie adaptation Perfume: the story of a murderer that explore this concept. The sense of smell is not as appreciated in modern times, but in the era without easy access to sanitary toiletries we take for granted, use of perfumes would have allowed for the possibility of social interactions. Scent is also the most primitive form of communication; insects and animals communicate via pheromones. Neurologically, scent and touch are the only two senses that bypass the thalamic gate to affect the higher cortical processes directly.

I think using perfume can accent a person's presence and bring about more positive interaction with the intended target audience. The trick is to identify the type of perfume that will communicate our intended message. Practically, men using women perfumes will likely have more success in accentuating positive impact on women and vise versa.
