We all dream and you would lie if you say you have not wondered what your dreams mean or if they are telling you something.
Since Descartes and Socrates, Freud and Jung, the world's best known philosophers and psychoanalysts have weighed in on this specific subject.
Are our dreams a window into our unconscious selves like Freud and Jung believed or are they merely the not so meaningful by products of sleep-related neural firings?
Studies done by dream researchers show that people tend to believe that their dreams reveals hidden truths about themselves and the world around them. This research in fact showed that people's dreams carried more weight than their conscious thoughts. People think that their dreams are revealing truths about their hidden emotions and beliefs more so than what they are thinking when they are awake.
They also found that people do not give the same value to all their dreams, some are more important to them than others.
The research showed that a person would most likely change his/ her travel plans after dreaming about a crash than after hearing or thinking about it. It also showed that a persons anxiety levels is just as high dreaming about the crash than hearing about it. Think about yourself sometimes we wake up and our heart is still pounding , you feel you are still in the dream and have to make sure you are not. Sometimes we can still feel the effect of that dreams for a while after we had it.
The research revealed that we considered unpleasant dreams more meaningful if they are about someone we dislike. We would perceive a pleasant dream more meaningful when it is about someone we liked. You can decide for yourself how you feel about this one.
As a rule we all consider dreams as meaningful until they are coming in conflict with our existing beliefs and desires, then we tend to attribute less meaning to them.
We can see that we still need to do a lot of research about this topic to fully understand how we interpret dreams and if they are indeed full of hidden information.

I think they vary. Some come from us working out the question that we have about life. Others I think come from elsewhere. I love my dreamlife and remember them often. Nice post!
Yes, I also think it is our minds way to deal with things that happen to us. I wish I can remember all my dreams.
Most are but if you could remember them you would realize that sometime they seem to come from somewhere else. Some prophetic visions do come through dreams.
It is interesting, have you experienced prophetic dreams before? I think it would be wonderful if I could have one.
Yes I have but it was when I was 14 and before I understood. I could have stopped our house from burning down the next day.

Thank you! It was a long time ago, 1970. I was 14 and did not know how I could explain it and doubted that any one would take me serious. They would say it was just a dream. So I hoped that was the case and I did not say anything. Today I say something and everyone thinks I'm crazy.
Very interesting - I wish I can remember all my dreams . I sometimes wake up during the night and think Whoa I must remember this but then comes morning it is gone and forgotten
That also happens with me, I must say no bad thing I dreamed about actually came true and I am happy for that. I think our mind deals with things in this way.

Well I must say now bad dream has come true and for that I am grateful. I think you dream about things that happen to you or that you are afraid of I think it is our brains way to deal with things.

I almost never remember my dreams. I had a friend (she died of cancer) that write down all her dreams and she believed that God shows her about things in her life. Her eldest son committed suicide and 2 days before this she dreamt somebody brought him home in a bakkie but he was badly burnt and dead. I don't give much thought to my dreams.
Me too they just leave me unsettled somedays if they are bad dreams.
