4G: Will it replace WiFi?

in #life7 years ago (edited)

In my previous post I was talking about data coverage in elevators but since I changed my mobile phone subscription I have a different view.

Many of you have a data bundle of let's say 2 to 4 GB's a month for your mobile phone. When there is free WiFi I bet 80 to 90% will connect to the WiFi. Right? So many companies are as of today investing in WiFi for their own employees or customers. WiFi is great but there is a change coming up I believe since a few weeks.

The dutch mobile provider T-Mobile has introduced an unlimited subscription a couple of weeks ago.
You get unlimited calls and unlimited data for a monthly fee of 35 euro's a month but with a limitation of 5GB per day.
After sending an sms (free of charge) to your mobile provider after you ran out of 5GB that day, you will get 1GB extra and after that runs out you can send another sms free of charge and so on.
Many of my colleagues have switched or upgraded their subscription immediately. I, however, had an bundle of 4GB a month and WiFi where I work and live so no problem here.

As of yesterday I saw that my mobile provider has also this new unlimited subscription for data which makes it interesting.
25 euro's for the same subscription T-Mobile was offering. Same rules, same package! Done deal!

So now what?
Well... The EU has decided to cancel all roaming costs as of the 15th of June this year. What does that mean for me?
First of all I can now use my mobile phone without restrictions in the whole EU with data! That means that the kids can watch Netflix on the backseat, the misses binge watch everything she wants while I focus on my driving skills. Not that I mind but it can be more relaxing for me also!

I think that corporate WiFi will still exists besides 4G / 5G in the future because not everything is in the cloud or will be in the cloud. When everything is in the cloud WiFi will be gone or maybe replaced for 4G / 5G cell antenna's to take off the load of the telephone company network but that's it.

My final wish is that:
One day I hope that I don't need a sim card anymore and that I can sign in on any mobile device with my own number. But that is a whole 'nother level of techniques and other difficulties.

What do you think about this unlimited data plan? Will it replace WiFi?

Well thank you very much for this inspirational post! Will take it to another level! Following you back of course!

WiFi uses microwave frequencies. These frequencies are not valid for long range communications because they are absorbed by air humidity and walls.

If mobile data usage does not increase very much, most public WiFi hotspots will disappear. But if people start consuming more and more mobile data by watching videos or using cloud storage, mobile networks will get saturated again so unlimited data plans will be more expensive or even disappear and WiFi use will remain. Unfortunately I find more likely the second case.

Technology is only pushing forwards. I sure do think public WiFi is slowly but surely on it's return. Why would a company nowadays invest in public WiFi if the public can bring their own unlimited data connection?
