You're not far from the truth, people are just being overly greedy.. Some politicians will bribe hungry and greedy citizens with few cups of rice and they sell their birthrights..

That is the reason why the economy is bad, the governments are corrupt, people are in need and nothing is enough because no one is satisfied yet. Luxury is intoxicating and everyone wants to have a taste of it and so is power.
