Blanket Night pt1
The night was once described in a tradition as a blanket of the sun, it is believed that we sleep because the sun also sleeps, and as the sun goes to sleep, she uses the night as a blanket thus the darkness of the night is a reminder to us that the time has come for us to sleep also. Evil was also believed to persist at night and those who do not sleep were perpetrators of evil. This held sway so much that it was customary for bearers of this tradition to embark on a series of thanksgiving when they wake in the morning giving it was no easy feat to see through the night, and whenever one woke up in the middle of the night it is believed that there is trouble brewing somewhere thus war rich prayers are offered at such times.
Her parents held this believe so much that they named her Owụwanyanwụ which meant "rising sun". This was because her birth came after a long and troubled night of labor, one that lasted till the sun was very bright in the sky. It was believed that the blanket called night had entangled the sun and prevented it from rising from sleep, this battle between the sun and the night was reflected in the labor leading up to her birth and when the sun finally prevailed, she was born.
She was told these stories when she was small and it was interpreted that she might struggle in life at the beginning but at the end she would prevail. She always took it to mean that she was a victorious person and built a world conquering personality.
She wouldn't say the beginning of her life was much of a struggle, things came easy for her and by the time she was twenty eight years of age she had obtained her doctoral degree in economics and was mother of one, a girl she named Chidaalu, meaning "thank God", she was thankful for all she had achieved. Things turned sour eight years into her marriage when after six years of having Chidaalu, the Chi{God} of child bearing had to forgotten her and the Chi of patience left her husband, he couldn't contain his disdain of her and was quick to show it at every giving opportunity but was best at showing at night. What transpired between them will be explored in the next chapter…
