Most likely the ones that lack the basics of gratitude are not just those that are unhappy for what they lack but it can be an effect of their subconscious mind.

Gratitude is a benign feeling that helps a human being to remain conformable and happy. The idea is to be thankful for everything, even if there is little to be had and received. Thank you for your comment, @okpocacious
