Bible wisdom: Many, LORD, are asking, 'Who will bring us prosperity?' Let the light of your face shine on us. Psalm 4:6
Psalm 4 is a plea to God and also a psalm of thanksgiving of a devotee to God for the blessings received. This is why the Psalm begins with these words: "Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer" Psalm 4:1. With this expression, the Psalm teaches that God is perfect, and that it is through his spiritual gifts, such as righteousness, wisdom, and mercy (compassion, gentleness, kindness), that he blesses and protects men.
And then the Psalm continues, and expresses that happiness and prosperity, which are spiritual goods very necessary for the life of man, as blessings can only arise when God shows his face to men; this is why the Psalm goes on and affirms: "Many, LORD, are asking, 'Who will bring us prosperity?' Let the light of your face shine on us" Psalm 4:6.
To understand the spiritual meaning of this request, one must know that the face of God in the sapiential literature, like the Book of Psalms, has a very particular and different concept from that shown in the Book of the Pentateuch. Seeing the face of the Lord in the sapiential literature means perceiving the perfection of wisdom with the gifts and intelligence that the creator bestows, and this is because God is the wisdom itself.
Seeing the face of God is, if it can be said so, the greatest blessing from God in the Old Testament. And the Bible offers numerous examples of people who lived and proved the truthfulness of this teaching. Like when Solomon saw the face of God in the holy place of Gibeon, and the Lord in that encounter transmitted to the young king the gifts of wisdom, understanding, and spiritual discernment to govern the Kingdom of Israel with great intelligence. Thanks to these gifts bestowed by God, Solomon led his kingdom to its greatest era of glory, happiness, and prosperity, like never before in its history.
Asking that the face of God shine upon men means the same spiritual communion with the creator, because like seeks like. The Bible, with its wisdom, teaches men to ask God for the best and most excellent things.
