The almighty loves: May the Lord our God show us his approval and make our efforts successful. Psalm 90:17

Psalm 90 is a prayer to God for his love and blessings in a context where man's life is short and difficult. Man is imperfect and sinful, the Psalm acknowledges, and in contrast to this fact, there is a wise and eternal God who judges men. It is very likely, though not certain, that this Psalm was written during the years of exile in Babylon, where the sufferings of the chosen people were great.
The Psalm is written in a pessimistic tone reminiscent of the Book of Ecclesiastes, which also elaborates on the brevity of life and the fate of wise men and fools; and so, the hymn affirms: "You turn people back to dust, saying, 'Return to dust, you mortals!'" Psalm 90:3. And faced with this brevity of life, in which there are only hardships and miseries, all the secrets of men are before the gaze of God, exclaims the Psalm.
This is why the Psalm takes a turn at this point and acknowledges that man only finds relief through God's wisdom, as when Solomon asked for a heart that knows how to listen to God in Gibeon, and thus the song requests the Lord's blessing with these words: "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom" Psalm 90:12.
And then hymn, alludes to the gift of hope, to escaping this state of misery and abandonment, to a state of bliss with God's unconditional love: "Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days" Psalm 90:14. The Psalm here is clearly pleading for God to give his children a change of perspective, a change of heart, so that they may see the face of God, something that did happen at many times in the history of the people of Israel. The song is ultimately asking for the grace of the gift of fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion), the spiritual gift that connects man with the eternal wisdom of the Almighty and the accomplishment of the law.
With this, the hymn is reminding us that God loves his children, but also that to be blessed, his children must not only obey the law, but also ask for the most excellent gifts so that they may see God's face and receive blessings from above; that is why the song ends with these words: "May the Lord our God show us his approval and make our efforts successful" Psalm 90:17.
