What Kind of Music Community Should We Build on Mangosteem? (Help Me Decide!)

in #mangosteem8 years ago (edited)

WHY CHAT FOR FREE? Mangosteem is a new "clone" of Steemit.chat which adds the ability to upvote and be upvoted.

This means you can be rewarded for your contributions in Steem chat just like you do on the Steem forums. This seems like an obvious next step for Steem's chatting system, bringing it fully into the Steemit economy and providing another great opportunity for minnows to join communities and meet new Steemians.

You can see Brian's original post about Mangosteem here: https://steemit.com/mangosteem/@mynameisbrian/introducing-mangosteem-steem-powered-web-chat

Starting a Music Community: What Genre to Focus On?

I want to start a music channel on Mangosteem & need help picking what kind of music to focus on. I don't want to just create a #music channel which would be a little too broad - metalheads and folk musicians won't be able to converse with each other, nor will they want to talk about Skrillex's new single, etc etc.

The best option is to focus on the smallest possible niche that can still draw a decent crowd of users (50+) who have interest. It'll be a great way for us to discover more music and meet musicians + music lovers with similar taste.

Here are my three ideas:

(1) Vaporwave -- I know there's a solid crew of people here who enjoy vaporwave. @kevinwong @granturismo89 are two who come to mind, and I could swear there are many others besides...

(2) Math Rock (edit: Or "Prog", as @steevc suggests, probably a better choice since it's a bit more all-encompassing) -- I know @bonvivian @the-dagda and several others have professed a love of math rock... are there enough of us to get a Mangosteem channel going? I know many people who might be recruitable into steemit if we build up some math love here.

(3) Electronic - a more general term by far, but if the first two are way too niche, I might go with this. Electronic music is a huge genre, but most people who enjoy any form of electronic will be able to talk to each other and share recommendations.

What do you think?

Do any of those three sound good to you? Or another idea you might have? Please share your thoughts in the comments and let me know if you are interested in participating. Also, join Mangosteem and say hi in the general channel, I'll be hanging out there all day!

We need a prog channel :)

Hmmm maybe this is the ticket actually! Prog is much more general than my personal favorite, math rock, which is a sub genre. Prog would appeal to way way more people. This is now my #1 vote :-D

Maybe @chicosonico can help you!
And I love the idea of the chat!! I will definitely check it out!

Ooh yea I would love to get his feedback. see you on mango :-D

Why genre and not start with something general music as long as they are in alpha?

I was thinking that being more niche might help to cultivate more of a real community - for some reason super general music chats are often awkward, cuz if you listen to metal and I listen to bluegrass, what will we talk about?

But you could be right. I'm really learning as I go here.... If I just make #music, it's the most likely thing to get people to join up right away.

IDK, I'm going to think about it more... I'll set it up tonight or tomorrow, and we'll see what happens. It's all an experiment, we're learning as we go :-)

Hmm, nice. But, yep, it's a tough one. I like math, but not that much, for me it's a bit too narrow. Prog is better, but first thing that comes to mind is 'alternative', although this is a reeeally vague term. But that means it's definitely not metal. It might be prog, it might be electronic. But yeah, what does alternative mean? Where do you draw the line? Is my soft bedtime crooning alternative in the sense matt sokol is? I would say so. But are queens of the stone age alternative? Yep. Red Hot Chili Peppers? Naaaah... Don't know man. It's really tough to come up with a criterion here. Mine is usually a form of sincerity - is it sincere in the way I understand the term? But this also doesn't mean anything.

Alternative is an interesting one. That could definitely work... thanks for the feedback, imma make the decision in a bit

IF IT AINT SOUL IT AINT ROLL LMAO STAY SCHEMIN
