SLC26-W2 | Churros
Boys can cook. I really appreciate @Nahela for giving boys and men on this platform the privilege to prepare something they have never for once tried. I love learning new things, and trying this is evident. Join me as I take you through @nsijoro's preparation of churros.
1. Make your own churros (include ingredients, quantities and step-by-step instructions) with my recipe or any other of your choice.
The ingredients I used were
1 cup of all-purpose flour, which weighs over 200 g
1 cup of water
2 tablespoons of butter, which weighs less than 100 g
1 egg
A pinch of salt and sugar
Half teaspoons full of vanilla
Preparation Steps
- As an instruction had it, the flour actually looked small for 1 cup of water, and since cups and glasses differ, I used a cup that is not too big. I poured more than half into my heating pan as I put it on my gas cooker. All this preparation was done in an external kitchen since it became a bit darker inside. I also poured alongside with the water my butter to steam simultaneously, and my sugar was added as well.

- As soon as I felt the heat, I switched off my gas and poured my flour inside and began to mix them. I mixed till it became succulent; it appeared different from the one mixed with ordinary cold water. Remember, my water was steamed.
- I allowed it for a while, then I added my egg; this made it softer.
- I was done, but I had to improvised something. Guess what?, A pastry bag, the pastry tutorial Nahela gave was very easy to follow, and I appreciate her for that. I wanted mine to be a bit exceptional; I made the zigzag star cut on my bottle cap, but this time, I didn't cut the top part out, but I perforated an entry hole close to the bottom of the container where I can easily scoop in my vigorously mixed play dough. At first, I thought it wouldn't work.
- After pouring, I set my hot oil on fire. My rope would cut easily if I had tied it to the pot to cut across the pot like a diameter because my pot was hot, so I had someone hold it across.
- As I pressed the container, the shape came out as seen in the guidelines. Amazing. At some point I bought it to the rope and cut it so it would not be too long. This was done till my dough was completely fried. Some stuck to the container, but more than 10 churros were made.
2 - When you tried the churros, what was your experience like? Did you like them? Explain your answer in detail.
Have you heard of cooking gone wrong? I can still remember the caramel pudding taught by @m-fdo. I didn't like my presentation because it didn't match with what my teacher prepared, but at least today with this practice I see closeness in what I made, and I think I am getting better.
I really enjoyed churros. After this preparation, Mum, my siblings and my cousin tasted it, with and without chocolate, and it was worth the cost of getting those items.
Another experience was when I tried to make my pastry bag; the bottle was difficult to press for the churros to protrude from the nozzle when I added a little churros. This wouldn't have been a challenge if I had used a plastic bag to press them out. I learnt something here as well.
3 - Is there a stand or business in your city that sells churros? Tell us.
This is my first time seeing and hearing of the word 'churros', meaning I have not seen anything like this in this city. With the right equipment, I may start making them; this would be very nice.
4 - What type of dough would you like to learn for our challenge #3?
I am not really good at using flour to produce edible substances, and I'd love to learn anything that is given to me, but if there is this dough that I love, @dwings, @whitie, and @bossj23 can testify that we buy this often whenever we trek back from school after a hectic day, and that is puff-puff. I just got to know that it is known as puff dough, and I would love to learn how to prepare this.
Apart from the challenge initiator, I'd love those mentioned above to join this contest
