A match factory is a factory where matchsticks and matchboxes are manufactured.

1. Wood is cut into thin matchsticks.
2. The sticks are dried and treated.
3. The ends are dipped in a chemical mixture to form the match heads.
4. They are dried and inspected.
5. The matches are placed into boxes.
6. A striking surface is added to safety-match boxes.
7. Finished boxes are packed and shipped.

Modern safety matches use safer formulations, while older factories often used white phosphorus, which caused serious health problems for workers.

The large-scale safety-match industry became especially important in Sweden, with the Jönköping and Tidaholm factories becoming famous internationally.
