Arsenic Lullaby- Rant- Avengers endgame and Mad Magazine
Godless nerds and Mad Magazine
I'll get back to updating you on my attempts to get American Mythology to see the light and put me on Casper next time...
Right now, we got something IMPORTANT to talk about, and that is... how I AM ALWAYS RIGHT.
FIRST -DC Comics has recently dismissed Bill Morrison as Editor in Chief of Mad Magazine. Let's go back a year or so to when they were about to move the Mad offices to California and I said "all you current editors and directors can kiss your jobs goodbye" and they were in fact- replaced...I also said there was no way DC was going to put any effort into Mad going forward and it was going to end up online only...I was wrong about that part because they hired Bill Morrison( but wait for it). and I said at that time I respected Bill and he had a good head on his shoulders.
Then...I watched on in horror as Bill made the exact same mistakes as the old crew. I didn't say anything as it went on because A-I respect Bill and was having trouble reconciling the ludicrous decision making with the man I met. and B- I felt no need to point out something I have been POINTING OUT FOR SEVEN YEARS...which is-
PERHAPS...JUST MAYBE...in the modern internet age...STILL PUTTING OUT TIME SENSITIVE CONTENT IN A MAGAZINE THAT TAKES A MONTH TO PUT TOGETHER ISN'T A GREAT IDEA? maybe? hmmmm?
Movie parodies that hit the stands after the movie has come and gone...political topics that have already been overshadowed by the time the book comes out....MAYBE that's not going to sell a lot of magazines for you?
And why, someone please tell me, in F*CK would you completely tilt the tone of the magazine toward politics and any particular side at all of politics?
It's a lose - lose situation. FIRST OFF, any topic you cover will have already been stomped dry by memes, and late night hosts and parody news websites 14 times over by the time you mag is in circulation....AND in case you didn't notice, the free world is pretty damn polarized right now. You can't evoke laughter about the subject of the polarization in that climate by taking a side. You can get a cheer from one side and a boo from the other side and that is it. As a stand up comedian, you learn quickly that cannot fight the ocean, you need to control the climate of the audience or your odds of getting a laugh aren't worth f*ck all.
You give your mag a heavy anti Trump feel...and this is what you get- Half of your readers turn away because they are sick of politics, half of the half that are left get pissed off, half of the half of the half that are left have already seen the topic covered online every single day.
...this was an exercise in , to use a football term, not staying in your lane. You know what happens in football when you don't stay in your lane? They run the ball to where you were supposed to be and score and then you lose. The strength of Mad is the talent of the creative team and the comedic quality they are able to produce...there does not need to be any theme, there does not need to be any direction beyond "give us your funniest pages by thursday". ALL that needed to be done was fill that magazine with whatever the funniest 64 pages you have are. and if that means it is nothing but 64 pages of Sergio Argones...then THAT is what you put out. For F8cks sake...it's not rocket science. It's about the funny stupid.
NOW THEN....speaking of football, during the SuperBowl..in which my team won AGAIN. There was a trailer for Avengers four. and what was front and center at the beginning of that trailers?
THIS
A poster and a therapy session (going on) for survivors of the snap.
I will take you back now to my blog from several months ago...
In which there was a part that I went on about how everyone would be needing therapy.
now look over ALLLLLLLLLLLLLL the godless nerds out there, who have disected these movies with thier screen captures, and slowing down frame speed, and enhacning whatever bullsh*t they think they can find to pair up with 30 years of thier little comic book collection to try to be the king nerd who managed to figure something out first.
all of em...go to youtube and type in Avengers endgame predictions.
The collected efforts and technology that all of geekdom has put into trying to figure out ANYTHING correctly, dwarfs the effort and technology we used to go to the f*cking moon....and yet...what is the ONE THING we know for sure will be an aspect of this movie? That a bunch of people need therapy.
And WHO is the one who said that? ME
ME, YOU GODLESS CRETINS HAHAHAHAHA... A guy who doesn't even know how to order the tickets online. A guy, who's major motivation for going was to leer at Mantis...
and I have not read ONE single page of the infinity war in the comics. Not one, I stopped reading Marvel about a year before that hit.
So suck on that!
I WAS RIGHT....FIRST.
Time travel or nah, who kills Thanos...blah blah blah, anyone can take a swing at that. Pick a character and you've got a 1 in 42 chance of being right. BUT ...I...predicted an aspect of the movie completely outside of even the peripheral.
..and I did it in a blog that was a parody...written to be absurd.
Hahahaha...I got something you can screen capture and analyze...
a picture
of
my
penis.
Alright then...back in a few days with normal programing

I've not read Mad in 30 years. Didn't even know it was still going, but then it's not big here. Things move so fast that it's hard to be topical.
All this speculation about the movies is pointless as the directors will just make something up anyway. It's just entertainment, but people take it so seriously. In fantasy anything can happen. I've not seen the new trailer, but it seems you were right. What's certain is that most of the characters will be back somehow as there is money to be made from them.
MOST people I mentioned Mad too while I was working for them would say the same thing "I didn't know it was still going" ...that's not good, eh? lol #comics
I have only good memories of Bill thanks to his work with Bongo and seeing his name for so many years, my love for Mad cannot be put into this small comment box. I completely see your point about time sensitive material in the mag, it should not feel like picking up a newspaper from a month ago when you get a fresh copy. With that being said, there is so many million of shows on every streaming service in which to parody, that they have too much content to deal with... which must be a nightmare for whomever is trying to figure out demographics to get advertisers. I forget where I was going with this comment, I'm just sad now. I wish I supported that Mad cartoon that was out more, didn't have the time, any time I caught it, it was fairly quality. Maybe their next venture will be a re imagining of the Mad TV show into like a Funny or Die type YouTube channel. Spy vs Spy Saturday morning kids show.
I saw Bill do nothing but make good decisions until Mad. I did work for Mad for seven years...the entire time trying to get them to understand that the landscape had changed and you can't do time sensitive sh*t anymore. The brand will live on...but the Magazine itself...I don't hold out a lot of hope.
7 years! Damn, awesome man. I think Mad magazine had an impact on me slightly more than the SNL writers room, almost as much as The Far Side or Simpsons as far as these things that helped defined what I find funny. Depressing times we live in, damn you internet!
I need to find your Mad magazine stuff. My Adolf Hitler Demon sketch on my wall just went up in personal value! Mad as a brand will sadly live on without a magazine, and maybe it shouldn't actually.
It's hard to think what MAD can do if they drop the film parodies. I haven't read it for decades, though. TV parodies would still work - they're slower to percolate through culture. Does MAD even have a readership?
The whole Marvel/DC film franchise isn't worth the fluff in my navel. I was forced to watch a couple (Wonder Woman was the last) and they've all been CGI over substance.
You want a comic-book tie-in? 'DeathNote' and 'Full Metal Alchemist' on Netflix ('FMA' wasn't that good, actually).
They actually did ( as in past tense) have a lot of pros and concepts that were not time sensitive ( Spy vs Spy for example) but they chose to fuck it all up
