God is merciful: He heard the prayer they uttered, and saved them through ISAIAH. Ben Sira 48:20
The Bible teaches that true love is a unifying force. And a demonstration of this truth is how in the Old Testament, God, always gave proof of his spiritual love to his devotees, but not so with those who transgressed his law and sinned. God is wise and merciful, and to receive his blessings, men must allow themselves to be loved. Many prophets viewed the old covenant as a marriage of love between Israel and God. And this was clearly seen when King Hezekiah, a God-fearing man, a descendant of King David, pleaded with God for help during the siege of Jerusalem by Sennacherib, tyrant of the Assyrian Empire.
The prophet Isaiah lived in the times when the dynasties of Israel and Judah coexisted, each in its own territory, but Israel had acquired the cults of the Phoenicians, and only Judah had remained with some kings on the paths of God. Isaiah prophesied, among other things, that the dynasty of the Kingdom of Israel would disappear at the hands of the Assyrian Empire because of its sins, and so it happened.
And after this, the conflict escalated because the Assyrian empire saw the promised land as a bridge to invade the prosperous kingdom of Egypt, and so Sennacherib attacked and besieged the city of Jerusalem. And it was at that moment that God especially remembered King Hezekiah and his people, and so God sent Isaiah to help King Hezekiah.
The master of wisdom Ben Sira, recalled that special moment of the history of Israel in his sapiential book and wrote:
"But they called upon the Most High God
and lifted up their hands to him;
He heard the prayer they uttered,
and saved them through ISAIAH. Ben Sira 48:20.
With this, Master Ben Sira emphasized the importance of turning to God in difficult times, and that God answers supplications when they ask for his mercy and help.
Isaiah, Ben Sira wrote, advised Hezekiah not to rely solely on the determination of men, but to put himself in God's hands; so it was, and Ben Sira wrote how Hezekiah, with the counsel of the prophet Isaiah, triumphed:
"God struck the camp of the Assyrians
and routed them with a plague" Ben Sira 48:21.
Ben Sira concluded in his book that there is no greater force than the common sense of men united with the providence and wisdom of God. God helps the meek, and humbles the proud.
